There is a disc golf park and a skateboard park, too, if those activities are more up your alley. One of the pride and joy attractions in the city is the New Hope Aquatic Park (open in the summer). There is something for every kind of water-lover, no matter the age or skill of the person. From the smallest toddler to the most grown up of adults, everyone will enjoy a splash in the pool. There is the shallow end, of course, for the newcomers. There is adult lap swimming and adult water walking, too. There are swimming classes and a lifeguard certification course as well. There are plenty of things you can do if you want to enjoy a night out. There is the New Hope Performance Center where you can watch a live performance. New Hope Boundaries
New Hope Then And Now
In the early days, New Hope was a farming community. It was settled as part of the Crystal Lake Township in the 1900s and several farming families found it a great place to live. The area continued to expand and grow, and there was a desire to incorporate in the 1930s. The City of Crystal incorporated in 1936, but the residents in the western rural area was not happy with this decision. They broke off and formed their own township. They did not want to pay taxes for things such as city sewers as they were farmers. They formed their own township and called themselves New Hope because that was what guided them at the time. There was some discord in the eastern area of New Hope Township, the part that was closest to Crystal. Some of the New Hope members wanted the amenities that came with being part of a city whereas others wanted to remain independent. That is why while there are three straight boundaries to the north, west, and south of New Hope, the eastern boundary is jagged and not smooth. There continued to be a tension between the City of Crystal and the New Hope Township as the former still had an interest in annexing the latter. Because the members of New Hope Township did not want this, they reluctantly decided to incorporate themselves in order to stave off said annexation. This happened in 1953, against the protestations of the farming community. They still had the same objections that they had earlier to being a part of a city, but they were a shrinking minority within the township. When they became the City of New Hope, they had 600 members. Five years later, they surpassed 2,500 people. The numbers steadily grew until they reached their peak of 24,000 in 1971. The numbers have declined since them and they are now roughly around 21,000.
