Minnesota is a state where nature has to be hardy to survive the winter (which is long). It's also a state in which there are plenty of people who are very interested in preserving the abundant nature we have.
It began as a dream in the minds of the Men's Garden Club of Minneapolis. They presented the Minnesota State Horticultural Society with the idea of an arboretum with the goal of allowing the local flora to flourish. In 1958, the women of the Lake Minnetonka Garden Club raised a gift that allowed 160 acres of land to be purchased in order to accomplish this dream.
Over the years since 1958, that 160 acres has grown into roughly 1,200 acres, owned and run by the University of Minnesota. It has developed several new cold hardy crops including the Honeycrisp apple, Edelweiss grapes, and several other varietes of apples and grapes. These cold hardy crops also include plants like the Northern Lights series of azalea, ornamental grasses, and flowering trees.
There are numerous classes and events to attend for adults and children alike to learn something new from gardening, arts & crafts, pollinators, and photography to home health and beauty, book clubs and a ton of free programs. There is so much to see and do at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum!
