Purgatory Community Preserve is the largest of the five community parks in Minnetonka at 155 acres. It's full of lush, green, scenery through which you can hike and bike. There is more than 2 miles of formal trails, and this includes a 1.2 trail loop within the park that allows you to see wetlands, prairies, and woodlands. The name comes from an apocryphal story about how early settlers traveling to nearby Excelsior came across this swampy, mosquito-plagued area and said, "This is hell!" Another settler retorted, "No, it's worse. It's Purgatory." There is also a picnic area so you can take a break and have a bite to eat.
