The North Shore of Minnesota, where this lighthouse is perched, is very rugged. And in November of 1905, nearly 30 ships sank along the coast. This area is known for its iron-ore, the basis of the booming steel industry.
Because of this storm, U. S. Steel petitioned congress to put in a lighthouse at Two Harbors where the North Shore was named "the most dangerous piece of water in the world."
The lighthouse was put in service in 1910 and operated for over 50 years.
The Split Rock Lighthouse is now a historical site and a very scenic landmark.
