The Weisman Art Museum opened in 1934 on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus as a campus museum. The mission of the museum is to bring inclusive art to the community, and it has grown considerably over time.

In 1993, the campus museum was moved to its current place on the Mississippi River. Frederick R. Weisman, a Minneapolis native, was a philanthropist, art collector, and along with his wife, Marcia, supportors of the arts heavily donated to the new building (and, yes, it was named after him).

Renowned architect, Frank O. Gehry, was commissioned to design the building. He was known for his bold strokes, metallic curvatures, and brashness. All of these are on display in the design of the museum.

As the museum kept growing, he was retained again to design the 8,100 square-foot expansion. After the expansion was finished, it was nearly twice the size it had been in the first place, and it opened to the public in 2011.

The museum's collection is more than 30,000 works of art. If you visit, you will be treated to a plethora of amazing art, including works from the aforementioned collection, traveling art shows, and other special events. You'll want to go back several times to see all that this museum has to offer.
