Blaine Overview
Blaine is a suburb of Minneapolis and as of the 2020 census, is rocerded to have a population of 70,222. After splitting with Anoka in 1877, it became a township. By 1880, it had grown to 128 people. Much of Minnesota relied on farming in the early 1900s. Blaine, however, was covered with wetlands and sandy soils, which made it poor farming territory. They mostly relied on hunting instead. They did have dairy farms, however, and sod farms, too. They became a village in 1954 and then a city ten years later in 1964. They didn't really start to grow until after World War II when they had starter home developments in the southern part of town. Northtown Mall was built in 1972, which really vitalized the city. It became a gathering place for members of the community and has gone trhough many changes throughout the years. There are several parks with a lot of greenery if you want to get your fill of nature on a nice walk. Tom Ryan Park is very popular because it has a large shelter area that is great for all kinds of celebrations and gatherings. There is also a water fountain that is eye-catching and draws attention to it on the daily. Aquatore Park is another favorite park because it has a shaded open area, two large picnic areas, and a dog park called Swanson Dog Park, which is a great place for big and small dogs (a separate area for each type of dog).

Blaine Then And Now
In the 1800s, what is now Blaine was part of The City of Anoka. There were a few settlers in the early days, but not many at all. It wasn't until 1877 that Blaine removed itself from Anoka and became a township. The first Chairman of the Board of Supervisors elected was a man named Moses Ripley. He was from Maine and convinced the other board members to call the ttownship Blain, after a senator and three-time presidential candidate from Maine, James G. BLaine. By 1880, Blaine had a populationof 128. Blaine didn't expreience much growth until after World War II when starter home developments were bulit in the southern part of town, thus making it attractive for people to live there. Blaine had to fend off neighboring communities trying to annex part of it. In attempt to stave off such attempts, they incorporated as a village in 1954.Then, they became a city ten years later in 1964. The population exploded in twenty years, going from 1,694 in 1950 to 20,640 in 1970. Blaine offered wide open spaces and that suburb feel while being easily accessible to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The population continued to grow, going over 50,740 people in 2002.
Blaine Environmental / Green
Blaine has a Natural Resources Conservation Board that is in charge of coming up with a Natural Resource Plan. This plan will also include their Environmental Policy and Guidelines. The board advises the city council on environmental issues.
