Brooklyn Center Boundaries
Brooklyn Center Then And Now
Brooklyn Township formed in 1858, the same year in which Minnesota achieved statehood. What is now Brooklyn Center was originally in the southeast part of Brooklyn Township and the northeast area of neighboring Crystal Lake  Township--which was established in 1860. Both of these townships were agrarian because the soil in the area was rich and fertile. They were close to the City of Minneapolis, which was growing at a rapid clip. This led to the townships being  mostly market gardening communities because it wsa the most viable way to make money. The area remained basically rural until after World War II. The Village of Brooklyn Center was incorporated in 1911, in part to stave off annexation by the City of Minneapolis. There was some land development in the thirties, but it was mostly in the southeastern corner of Brooklyn Center. There was more action in the 1940s. The land became more valuable, so the farmers started selling to land developers. The population also growed at a fast pace, and by 1960, the population went from 500 (when it incorporated as a village) to 4,300 by 1950 to over 24,000. The City of Brooklyn Center was incorporated in 1966.
