Sunray - Battle Creek - Highwood Then And Now
Sunray, Battle Creek, and Highwood are separate neighborhoods that are grouped together geographically. Sunray and Battle Creek were both mostly wilderness until after World War II because it was mostly marshlands and wooded bluffs. Highwood, on the other hand , went through a failed attempt to make it into a commuter suburb. Because the neighborhoods were underdeveloped for so long, housing didn't really get built until the 1970s or later. Many of the houses were built for the employees of Minnesota's largest employer, 3M.
Sunray - Battle Creek - Highwood Environmental / Green
The District Council is committed to protecting the environment. One of their concerns is soil erosion and another is unifying the development of the water ad sewer service under the name of the City. The District Council will also provide a liaison to the Board of Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District and work with them to continually monitor Battle Creek and Fish Creek for erosion. In December of 2019, St Paul adopted a Climate Action & Resilience Plan, in conjunction with the Great Plains Institute. In this document, St Paul is setting a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. St Paul is pushing to have increase sustainability in a couple different ways. 1. They are looking to reduce carbon by making buildings more efficient. This would include changing the building codes to increase efficiency. 2. They are looking to have the transportation sector change to electric vehicles. They also want people to drive less.
