Crystal Boundaries
Crystal Then And Now
In the early days of Minnesota, parts of it were acquired in a piecemeal fashion. By the late 1800s, it was stabilizing itself somewhat. The Crystal Lake Township was established in 1860, taking land from the Town of Minneapolis to the south and the Town of Brooklyn to the north as part of the township. The first settler was John Ware Dow in 1852, and he got to see the township grow over the years. In the following years, several things were built, including a flour mill, a shingle mill, a blacksmith shop, and a hotel. The beginning of the Civil War happened soon after, which, understandably, brought turmoil to the town--as with all other towns in the state. During this time, the City of Minneapolis was expanding and taking parts of the Township of  Crystal every time it did. It was a turbulent time for the township, which was understandable given the circumstances. Crystal Village/Village of Crystal was incorporated in 1887 and had their first election of officers a f ew months later. At this time, the population was roughly 587, but the fluctuation of each town surrounding Crystal Village continued. That meant that Crystal Village had parts of it taken and took other parcels of land, too. It continued to grow, however, adding the Crystal Post Office in 1887 and City Hal built in 1891. That served until 1951 and was used as a place for the council to meet until 1958. The Northside Fire Station housed the city's administrative offices from 1951 to 1959. They moved one more time before the new and current City Hall was dedicated in 1965. Because of the annexations and discord, the Village of Crystal was in disarray in the late 1800s. It became united once again in 1911 to prevent an annexation by the City of Minneapolis. The Township of New Hope was re-formed in 1936, taking a chunk of western Village of Crystal with it. This made it so that there were adjustments to the boundaries of Crystal Village over the next several years. Nevertheless, the City of Crystal became a City of the Second Class in 1960. Today, Crystal is a community that is very welcoming to anyone and everyone. There are many things that are attractive about it, including acres and acres of greenery. There are beloved parks, such as Becker Park and Welcome Park. There are also good restaurants, Elision Playhouse for performance art, and quick access to Downtown Minneapolis for other fun nightlife activities. It's a good balance between big city and small town, and it's a good neighborhood for a wide variety of people.
Crystal Environmental / Green
Crystal has a 10-person commission called the Environmental Quality Commission; they advise the city council on matters of the environment, including conservation, environmental policies, education around such issues, etc. In addition, it raises awareness of these issues in public and makes sure that members of the community are kept up to date on said issues. It also maintains the protection of the environment as a top priority. It has programs that promote ecological preservation, such as the Adopt-a-Storm Drain program and the Medicine Drop Box program. In addition, they have much useful information to share with people about how to be good to the earth. In addition, the City of Crystal offers a home improvement grant that aids home owners in improving the maintenance of their houses and energy improvements, including the disconnection of storm water drainage, and the replacement of or the lining of a sanitary sewer system.
